winning essay:
mrs. shugart teaches kindergarten and this year welcomed my daughter, samantha in her classroom. with samantha having down syndrome, we weren't expecting her to attend a mainstream kindergarten. often special needs stories are filled with frustration about how they are treated in the school districts, mainstreaming often overwhelms the teachers and students. samantha faces difficulties with her speech and articulation, muscle tone, fine motor skills and learning difficulties, mrs. shugart welcomed her with open arms and we are blessed she is samantha's teacher. audra teaches 19 other students as well. she helped them adjust to the kindergarten routine/curriculum, and still had the energy to ensure samantha adjusted to the long day and class schedules, too! mrs. shugart bolsters my confidence in samantha's future. when you ask mrs. shugart how it's working out. her reply is always the same, "we can do it, we can work through anything!" hearing these words in such a calming, confident manner allows us to begin each day with a surge of hope and pride. mrs. shugart is preparing samantha for a future of learning and building relationships with her peers, a loving teacher that respects and understands the needs of our little girl.
